Gigabyte Aorus 17G (2021) Review

Ampere is already on laptops, in 2021 Gigabyte updated the Aorus 17G and specifically gives us the first chance to see the RTX 3080 running on mobile devices. It introduces a 300Hz display for the first time on an Aorus laptop and sees the return of the Aorus Mobile Physics keyboard.

The Gigabyte Aorus is thick. The thick design looks retro compared to current thin designs from other brands, such as the ASUS TUF Dash or MSI GE66 Raider. But there is no reason to worry. The benefits are clear, as the Gigabyte Aorus 17G weighs about the same as two cases of wine, with a significant build quality factor.

The chassis is made of CNC-milled aluminium. It will not bend or warp at pressure points or in the ventilation area at the top of the keyboard.

As for the keyboard, it’s definitely not a true mechanical keyboard. It has to fit in a small space, but all the basic functions are accessible, which makes it exceptional on a laptop. OMRON’s mechanical switches attempted a 1.6 mm travel regardless of overload conditions and also made a pleasant click.

The exterior of the laptop doesn’t have a polished gamer aesthetic, but the RGB backlighting shines with the Gigabyte logo on the lid and keyboard. Without the rainbow-colored lights, you’d think it was an old laptop. Since the chassis hasn’t been improved, it’s pretty bland compared to its competitors.

The matte black surface of the aluminium housing is highly resistant to fingerprints and can be easily wiped clean. Okay, this sounds like a stress-relieving trick if you’re considering buying a more sensitive device, but it would be a mistake to intentionally try to damage your new device to check it out in person.

The power button is located in the middle of the laptop open on the keyboard, so it cannot be accidentally pressed while typing. The size of the button is impressive and makes the layout a bit clunky, but the utility outweighs the lack of visual appeal.

The webcam sits above the power button, which seems to be from an older model, so you still have an ugly angle under your chin when making video calls. Webcams aren’t really the main selling point of gaming devices though, but if you want a camera that’s good for conferencing, broadcasting and streaming, you can get another webcam.

The webcam was placed on the bottom of the laptop, probably due to the narrow edges of the screen, leaving little room for additional hardware. The 17.3-inch 1080p display offers unparalleled color accuracy and clarity, as well as an amazing 300Hz refresh rate, so you can play competitive games like Apex Legends or Valorant at the highest possible frame rate (FPS).

On the sides of the device, you’ll find Ethernet, HDMI, a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port, dedicated audio connectors for input and output, a mini display port (DP), three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and a full-size SD card reader. All this makes it a good choice for creative professionals like photographers or 3D artists.

The updated Gigabyte Aorus 17G is one of the latest gaming laptops with the new Nvidia RTX 3000 graphics card. The test configuration includes the RTX 3070. Desktop GPUs have been a dreaded dream since their launch. With prices rising, buying one of these state-of-the-art gaming laptops is a suitable economic option.

It features an Intel Core i7-10870H processor and 32GB of memory, so the Nvidia GPU can drive all your games and software. This makes the Triple Threat one of the most powerful, yet most expensive gaming laptops on the market.

Fortunately, for those on a tight budget, the technical specifications translate surprisingly well into actual performance. For example, Metro Exodus, a graphically demanding game, averaged 68 points per second on Ultra settings to enjoy the game with smooth, enjoyable gameplay.

It was also noted that game load times were incredibly fast, with games like Rust starting up within 30 seconds. You can also enjoy the benefits of Nvidia RTX. The ray tracing effects available in supported games will enhance your experience, regularly via frame rates. In addition, you will be supported by the DLSS. Thanks to machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), you can enjoy improved graphics without worrying about the impact on real-world game performance.

32 GB RAM seems a bit excessive for people who only want a laptop specifically for games. However, for professionals, the extra memory (and the few other available ports) is a good option for those who want a device for remote work. With 32GB of RAM, it’s a great multitasking device. It’s one of the few gaming laptops that can easily handle live streaming while gaming, so even for creative professionals, it’s worth buying.

In terms of battery life, the Gigabyte Aorus 17G is pretty interesting for a gaming laptop. The battery has a life of about six hours without being connected to a power source. That’s more impressive than competitors like the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733, which has a shorter battery life of about four hours and 43 minutes. Gaming laptops can’t run on battery for long because their powerful hardware requires a lot of power to operate properly and efficiently. But a typical gaming session lasts between three and five hours, so this device shouldn’t get in the way if you’re playing without a charge. Due to its weight, this bulky device is not the best option for people who want to play with their laptops on the go.

The Gigabyte Aorus 17G sets itself apart from the competition with a full-size physical-mechanical keyboard. It has a numeric keypad and full-size keys, an easy-to-read Arial font, and multimedia keys in the Fn bar. Omron’s full RGB and low-click profiles vary with a key travel of 2.5mm and a trigger point of 1.6mm to enhance gaming effects. The keys are also perfectly smooth.

Although a 4.1 x 2.8 precision touchscreen meets the requirements for smooth point-to-point operation, friction is required for accurate input and proper multi-touch operation. The fingerprint reader is located in the top left corner and is therefore unusable for inputs.

Based on the RTX 3070, this laptop is without a doubt one of the most powerful and newest gaming laptops on the market. It is also one of the best built-in keyboards for laptops. It is an incredible example of what an excellent laptop keyboard should be. It’s a heavy laptop, but for people who want a few extra hours of gaming on the go, the good battery life is the best option.
